The project is funded by NWO (The Dutch Research Council; Project number  VI.Veni.211F.093) and hosted by the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at the University of Utrecht. This research project runs from 2022 to 2025. 

Public Overview of the Project

While since the fourteenth century Shiʿi jurists proposed a third sex and/or gender to categorise intersex individuals, contemporary Islamic discourses employ a binary gender and sex logic. Challenging the binary approach, this legal-hermeneutical study examines the little-understood non-binary conceptions of sex and/or gender in Shiʿi Islamic law, which remain essential for intersex and transgender Muslims today.

Publiek Overzicht van het Project

Terwijl sjiitische juristen al in de veertiende eeuw een derde gendercategorie introduceerden voor intersekse personen, hanteren hedendaagse Islamitische discoursen een binaire genderlogica. Deze juridisch-hermeneutische studie bevraagt die binaire benadering en onderzoekt de weinig begrepen non-binaire genderopvattingen in sjiitische Islamitische wetgeving, die essentieel blijven voor intersekse en transgender moslims tegenwoordig.
